Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

Will be updated September 2018 - thank you for your patience.

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas Holiday and are ready to start an exciting new year in Class 4! Lots going on and lots of learning to do.

This page is all about what class 4 are learning each term. It will give information about what is coming up, such as class trips, and look at some of the things we will be learning. It will also include homework and skills that year 4 children need to be practising at home.

What we are learning about this term

Our topic this term is Blue Abyss. Grab your wet suit because we're going deep into an underwater world of incredible coral and mysterious sea creatures. We will be learning all about life in the ocean depths, sea creatures and the coral reef; discovering about the oceans and seas of the world in geography and using branching databases to classify sea creatures in science. We will also learn about real life ocean explorers and get creative with different media to create lots of beautiful artwork. Our Novel Study this term is based around 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne and we will be using this as a stimulus for our writing in Literacy. If you have anything at home that we can use and you think might fit in well with this topic, please let me know.

Visits this term

Our visit this term will support our learning and we have a very exciting trip to look forward to!

On 23rd February we will be visiting The Deep in Hull, where we will explore the aquarium and take part in exciting workshops to learn about the coral reef. Please check back for more information about costs.

Times Tables

Times tables are incredibly important now your child is progressing through KS2 and I would encourage you to help your child with these at home. The government say that children are expected to leave Y4 fluent in ALL their times tables up to 12x12. Children should already have mastered the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in KS1, so we will be focusing on the 3, 4, 6 and 8 times tables. When your child is fluent in these they should progress onto the 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables. We will be having weekly times tables tests to assess where the children are and how much support they need in this area. For more information on your child's numeracy targets please visit the Maths Passport page here.

Spellings

Spellings are given out every Wednesday for the following week. Please make sure you practise spellings with your children throughout the week in preparation for their test on a Wednesday. They should also practise writing them in a sentence on the back of their homework sheet so that they are able to apply them and understand the meaning, especially words that have the same sounds but different spellings!

Reading

Children should read to an adult every night for about 10 minutes. Please encourage a love of reading with your child and make time in their day to share a book and talk about what they have read. Reading books are changed each Friday morning.

PE Kit and Uniform

PE will take place every week on a Tuesday, so can you please make sure that all children have appropriate PE kit in school (white T-shirt, black or blue shorts, pumps). Please make sure that all PE kit, as with any uniform, has your child's name in it. It would be useful if PE kit was left in school all week in case we have to change our PE lessons for any reason. To keep our school looking nice and tidy, can we please remind you to make sure that children have suitable indoor slippers or pumps.

Collective Worship

Every Thursday we will be having our own class collective worship. This is a safe space where the children will have time to reflect on what is exciting about new things but also discussing any worries that they may have. Please encourage this through morning prayer. The children may write a special prayer in an afternoon that we can share and this will be kept in our special prayer book.

If you have any queries about anything please don't hesitate to ask. We are always happy to help.

Thank you,

Miss Day
